They say "You can't stop the beat," and Musical Theatre West is certainly not trying.

Tonight, the company opens its production of "Hairspray" - the musical adaptation of John Waters' 1988 ode to big hair, TV dance shows and the civil rights era - at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach.

"I'm a John Waters fan," said Larry Raben, who most recently directed another film-based musical, "The Wedding Singer," for the company. " `Hairspray's' a story of family values, of integrating communities. It's really, really powerful."

Set in 1962 Baltimore, "Hairspray" tells the story mainly through the eyes of white teenager Tracy Turnblad, who dreams of dancing on "The Corny Collins Show." Tracy has the moves, but is turned away for being too fat to be on TV. The organizers also turn away a black girl, Little Inez, for being the wrong race (the show allows people of color just once a month, during "Negro Day").
