GENESEE COUNTY, Michigan — The ring was ordered online. So was the wedding dress.
It was the only way to plan a Genesee County wedding when the bride- and groom-to-be were both stationed in Afghanistan.
On Wednesday, the couple — U.S. Army PFC Jessica Carpenter and Sgt. Eric Rickards — flew into Bishop Airport to make final preparations for their wedding on Monday.
First order of business? Rickards, 24, of Colorado met Carpenter’s family, who lives in Flushing, for the first time. Then he retrieved the engagement ring he had ordered from Afghanistan, got down on one knee in the airport concourse and asked Carpenter, 21, to marry him.
“I was nervous. I was really nervous,” Rickards said. “I just turned to her and looked at her. She started crying and that made me more nervous.”
Carpenter, a 2008 Kearsley High School graduate, and Rickards first met at Fort Bragg, North Carolina last December.

Choosing the perfect wedding gown is one of the highlights of preparing a wedding for most brides. Just like the rest, I was in a big hurry to find my dress. So I convinced my mom to go with me to shop for a gown early on the planning stage. I knew what I wanted but was instantly discouraged when I saw the styles in stores. Everything was strapless and I knew I didn’t want that. They had a few modest options but I didn’t like the way they looked on me.
Exhausted from trying on numerous dresses and seeing other cheery brides finding their “perfect dress”, I wanted to go home. I didn’t know what I was going to do. I wanted to be a modest bride, but there weren’t any options that I liked.
My mom suggested contacting a local seamstress and asking her to make a dress the way I had envisioned. So after looking at a few patterns, we contacted the seamstress. Much to my disappointment she said she didn’t make wedding gowns anymore. I was devastated. Now what hope did I have?...
