What's 'rustic chic' for wedding outfit?

This week, I'm dipping into the Style Girlfriend reader mailbag to answer one confused wedding guest's dress code question. He writes:

"I'm going to a wedding later this month with my fiancee. It's an outdoor wedding in Philadelphia, and we're told the reception will be in a barn. So I know I need to dress warmly, but I don't know what's appropriate. Here's the note from the bride herself:

" 'Some of you have asked us what to wear. Our dress code is rustic chic, and therefore, you should wear whatever makes you happy.'

"Okaaay, so ... what does 'rustic chic' entail?!"

Wedding dress codes seem to be getting more and more imaginative, yet less and less helpful.

I have to admit, "rustic chic" is new, even to me. It sort of sounds like one of those sit-down fast-food restaurants at the mall that serves $15 beet and goat cheese paninis and hibiscus lemonade, don't you think?

While the bride was clearly trying to be accommodating in her explanation, I can see why it didn't help you at all in deciding what to wear. The key with any special event wardrobe is to look appropriate for the occasion but still comfortable. In this case, that means warm. Because the only thing worse than sitting through a predictably terrible best man speech is shivering through it.
