Designer Evening Dress auckland

Designers up with best

Every year aspiring designers pitch their best work against one another for Westfield Style Pasifika.

With plenty of tourists in town, the 17th event at Vector Arena will be quite a show.

Among the creations from top international and New Zealand designers will be a piece by Vislath Cheng of Mt Wellington and another by Sarah Horton of Remuera. Their garments are two of the 45 whittled down from 300 entries from across New Zealand.

Miss Cheng, 31, is in her second year of study towards becoming a primary school teacher.

"I did a fashion diploma but at the end of it there just weren't any jobs. I got a teacher aide job and loved it, so here I am.

"I created my entry for Style Pasifika while my nine-year-old daughter was away on holiday. I needed something to do to keep me busy and I'd always wanted to enter."

Her design is made out of woven mats which she cut into pattern pieces and sewed together.

Thanks.

black is always a color that works for evenings — I like the tea length myself, it adds length to your form — of course high heels are a must, hard to find a guy who doesn’t love those — a plunging neck line to show off your assets — jewelry of your choice to finish it off

What is the most common material used for classic formal evening dress? I’m a sewing newbie who wish to DIY a formal evening dress. My final goal is to sew a dress with kimono material. But before i go cut up my precious kimono, i thought i should practice on a “common” material with the dress design. Then, i can still wear it out even though its a “practice” piece.

Most evening dresses are made with either silks or silk-like polyesters. Dupioni and shantung silks are favorites for many designers, the dupioni has a nice satin sheen while the shantung is slightly less shiny with good body for structured bodices and a nice drape for full skirts. Also used by top designers is Duchesse silk satin, a lovely beautiful fabric that has a wonderful satin shine, beautiful drape and looks as expensive as it is. I love working with duchesse silk satin. Polyesters come in weaves and finishes similar to their silk counterparts, some polyesters are cheaper than silks (such as duchesses satins) while for others the silk is the same price. Satin, by the way, is a weave, not a fiber. you can have polyester sating fabric, silk satin fabric, wool satin fabric, rayon, acetate, any fiber can be made into satin fabric. A dupioni or shantung will have many of the same handling properties as kimono fabric, you want to design sample fabric to be similar in properties to the finished design fabric....

Style Pasifika event invites global designers | Stuff.co.nz

Along with some of New Zealand's finest up-and-coming talent, there are some big names joining the Style Pasifika party this year to show off some of our local resources.

Prime Minister John Key has personally invited the world's top designers to create a rugby-themed garment out of local merino for the two-day celebration of New Zealand's fashion diversity.

Designers including Ireland's John Rocha, Japan's Yohji Yamamoto and Australia's Tigerlily will join England's Elizabeth Emanuel - who designed Princess Diana's wedding dress - and a collection of designers from other Rugby World Cup nations in showing off the garments that are inspired by their home countries and reflecting the ethics and values of rugby.

They will join New Zealand designers such as World, Zambesi, Sabatini and Annah Stretton in the show, as well as the 45 local finalist designs of the Westfield Style Pasifika Fashion Awards, with winners announced on Wednesday night.
