Whew. It’s just Spirit Week at Alhambra High School. Homecoming is this weekend – let the craziness begin!
Autumn is here again and with it comes homecoming celebrations – rallies, parades, speeches, dances and the Big Game are being staged across the nation. and alumni are en route.
The University of Missouri claims to have started the first homecoming in 1911. By the 1920s homecoming had become an American tradition. Nearly every American has a homecoming memory. As a sophomore I remember sitting in the stands as a member of the marching band, watching with disbelief as our mighty football team fell to our opponents. Aghast, I could hardly bring myself to go to the dance. But I went and had fun anyway.
As a parent, homecoming could be exhausting. Many schools promote class rivalry during Spirit Week. Our children were active in clubs and organizations during their years in high school, which often translated to extra duties for mom and dad. There was the year the juniors decided to build a balloon arch that would tower over the senior’s school entrance decor. Three a.m. found us at the school tying off helium balloons. It was fun in spite of the blisters on my fingers. The exuberance of the young is infectious and we should all be so lucky to catch that bug.
