Romance back for school formals
ROMANCE is set to make a fashion comeback when Year 12 girls across the Coast step out for their high school formals.
Slinky satin numbers are out and crushed taffeta is back, according to local gown suppliers.
"It's really a Pirates of the Caribbean-style dress girls are going for this year," Johns Formalwear manager Karen Allgood revealed.
"Girls are looking for a real old-world look, complete with updo hairstyles and spiky stilettos.
"I think it's a real romantic style, it's just putting the romance back into the school formal night."
That means taffeta, ruffling, and voluminous skirts will replace the slinky satin creations of recent years.
Strapless, bright-coloured gowns are still a popular choice for formal dress shoppers this year, and diamante bling is experiencing a revival in the form of brooches, beading or gown detailing.
Hills in Hollywood acting store manager Kirsten English agrees Hollywood or catwalk-inspired print fabrics and ball gowns in bright and funky colours will also brighten up dance floors on formal nights.

Sept. 30, 2011 was a night of elegance. It seems like just yesterday that our very own President Rick Hurley was inaugurated as our ninth president to serve at the university. UMW students, community members and the family and friends of President Hurley graced the Anderson Center in their best attire. Ladies pulled out old prom dresses and gentleman knotted the tie to celebrate in this marvelous occasion. Little to say, most were dressed to impress.
One dress that seemed to have a statement was worn by junior political science major Kellan Latif. This black asymmetrical dress stood out from the rest. Form fitted and accented on the side with a beaded piece, the dress laid floor length, matching the elegance and grace of the night. The dress was draped in the front and had a small yet distinct train in the back which complimented her tall, slender statue....
