Costume Expert Brings New Meaning to 'Suck it Up.'
A costume and textile expert stopped for tea at the Haddon Fortnightly on Sunday afternoon and shared beauty secrets with about 100 other women. She came with lingerie, an evening gown, bust enlargement tips, hip pads and a sense of humor.
Barbara M. Darlin of Swarthmore, who works in the costume and textile design department of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, had studied the fashion and hygiene of American women in the years between 1890 and 1914. She left the stage a bit breathless from a tight corset and about 14 pounds of clothing, including a low-cut ball gown and a collared plush velvet opera coat. “Breathing is over-rated,” she quipped.
“Beauty then was different than beauty now,” said Darlin, who later estimated that the costume a lady of means would don for a ball or a theater, or even a fancy meal, could cost as much as $8,500 in today’s dollars.
A woman needed a wealthy husband to afford the three to five costume changes she would make daily, (to oversee household maintenance, receive guests, visit friends, enjoy a carriage ride and share dinner with her family). She’d also need a lady’s maid to care for the clothing and help with the duties of dressing both her body and her hair.
